SUMMARY:Matters of the Mind: Understanding Eating Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Join BCACC for Understanding Eating Disorders: Causes\, contributing factors\, common myths\, and how to support someone in recovery. \nAn eating disorder can often go unnoticed. In fact\, people with eating disorders may go to great lengths to conceal symptoms and behaviors from others\, including loved ones and healthcare providers. \nThis presentation aims to raise awareness about eating disorders and provide information on how to recognize and seek help for those who may be struggling with them. \nWhat we’ll cover: \n\nAn overview of common disordered eating symptoms (behaviours\, feelings\, thoughts) and description of Anorexia Nervosa\, Bulimia Nervosa\, Binge eating Disorder \nPre-conditions and contributing factors for the development and maintenance of eating disorders \nEating disorders as a defense mechanism and survival strategy \nMyths\, misconceptions\, and stereotypes of eating disorders  \nWays to support folks in their recovery process \n\nAbout the presenter: \nAlex Charleton / Counsellor for The Looking Glass Foundation \nAlex is a strong believer that we heal in community\, and that our strongest potential for transformative change occurs in safe connected relationships. She is excited to be a part of the Looking Glass Foundation’s work and mission in providing compassionate\, low-barrier\, community-based support for any persons seeking help in healing from disordered eating and eating disorders. Alex believes everyone deserves support\, no matter where they are in their journey. \nAs a clinical counsellor\, Alex feels it is such a privilege to walk alongside others as they find their way back home to themselves. Alex is passionate about providing care and guidance for eating disorder recovery because she knows how challenging and liberating it can be to restore and mend one’s relationship to food\, body\, and soul. \nIn Alex’s free time\, you can find her cooking up a storm in the kitchen\, chasing sunsets\, and getting curious about life with friends and loved ones. \nAbout Matters of the Mind \nThese presentations are free online events for the public that are focused on mental health topics that are relevant to the people of BC.
