SUMMARY:Working with Kids in High-Conflict Divorce: Safe\, Effective\, and Ethical Practice for the “Average” Therapist
DESCRIPTION:Children of high-conflict separation and divorce need our help\, but the context does not make it easy for us as child\, adolescent\, and family therapists.\nParents in high conflict may not agree on the need for therapy or which therapist to select. One parent may see the other parent’s suggestion for therapy for their child as the beginning of a campaign to reduce their parenting time. The apparently high proportion of regulatory complaints is legendary. Ethics professors\, who have likely avoided these kinds of situations\, are typically little help\, simply warning students to stay away from these families. Senior colleagues and clinical supervisors can provide emotional support\, sometimes with a “I’m glad you it’s you and not me” sentiment\, but more often than not\, lack the knowledge to provide clear guidance. In this workshop\, Dr. Jeff Chang provides a framework that combines risk management for practitioners with respectful engagement of parents\, and support for children and adolescents. \n  \nRegister Now\nIn this workshop\, Dr. Jeff Chang will: \n\nDescribe the phenomenon of high conflict separation and divorce and its effects of children and adolescents\, and the effects on practitioners\nProvide a framework for “getting parents (or guardians) in the door” in a way that shows that as practitioners\, we are not aligned with one parent\nGive insight into obtaining informed consent\, maintaining a balanced therapy process\, and creating a context to “just let us do our work”\n\n

SUMMARY:Focusing Oriented Therapy Training and Certification
DESCRIPTION:FOT is a remarkably effective somatic approach\, particularly valuable for working with trauma and clients who are ‘stuck’\, and for preventing therapist burn-out. \nFocusing was developed by Dr. Eugene Gendlin\, a colleague and key contributor to the work of Carl Rogers.  Gendlin’s research sought to answer the question – \nWhy are some clients successful in counselling\, while others are not?\nWhat he found was that the counsellor’s modality wasn’t the definitive difference; rather it was something the successful clients themselves were doing.  They had a way of checking inside\, of listening to an internal voice that was distinctly different from the more familiar conscious ‘thinking brain.’  His research led him to develop a series of steps to teach therapists how to guide clients to tune in to this individual inner voice.  That personal\, unconscious voice is what takes a client past their thinking brain and down into the core of their issues.  The method allows them to consistently go to the edge of the unknown and tap into what needs to happen next so that the healing process can start its forward movement. \nParticipants are welcome to attend single modules or the complete 16-month series\, and may become certified as a “Focusing Oriented Therapist” (FOT).
