SUMMARY:Focusing Oriented Therapy Training and Certification
DESCRIPTION:FOT is a remarkably effective somatic approach\, particularly valuable for working with trauma and clients who are ‘stuck’\, and for preventing therapist burn-out. \nFocusing was developed by Dr. Eugene Gendlin\, a colleague and key contributor to the work of Carl Rogers.  Gendlin’s research sought to answer the question – \nWhy are some clients successful in counselling\, while others are not?\nWhat he found was that the counsellor’s modality wasn’t the definitive difference; rather it was something the successful clients themselves were doing.  They had a way of checking inside\, of listening to an internal voice that was distinctly different from the more familiar conscious ‘thinking brain.’  His research led him to develop a series of steps to teach therapists how to guide clients to tune in to this individual inner voice.  That personal\, unconscious voice is what takes a client past their thinking brain and down into the core of their issues.  The method allows them to consistently go to the edge of the unknown and tap into what needs to happen next so that the healing process can start its forward movement. \nParticipants are welcome to attend single modules or the complete 16-month series\, and may become certified as a “Focusing Oriented Therapist” (FOT).

SUMMARY:Working with Children: Getting comfortable with different levels of risk
DESCRIPTION:WORKING WITH CHILDREN IS RARELY BLACK & WHITE\nWorking with children involves several risk factors. As a counsellor\, how prepared and equipped are you to handle these situations? \nWhen children or their parents seek counselling for on their behalf\, things are rarely black and white. Counsellors are often hesitant or sensitive to the complexities of these situations due to existing regulations\, the risk of complaints\, or a potential lawsuit. It doesn’t have to be that way. \nThis workshop will prepare counsellors to accurately identify red flags as well as evaluate\, and manage risk while providing the best care their young clients need.  \nHow this workshop will help your practice: \n\nUnderstanding grey areas surrounding consent and identifying your risk tolerance level\nAsking the right questions and identifying red flags\nSpotting nuances when children seek counselling for themselves or when parents seek counselling for their children\nQuantifying risks\nConducting a thorough background evaluation\n\nABOUT THE PRESENTER:\nJohn-Paul is an accredited family law arbitrator\, family law mediator and parenting coordinator. Over an illustrious 25-year career\, he has specialised in law and procedural reform\, public legal education\, children’s rights and involvement in justice processes\, the impact of parental conflict on children\, access to family justice\, and the psychological aspects of relationship breakdown and parenting after separation. John-Paul is presently a member of the ADR Institute of Canada\, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts\, and Family Mediation Canada. He is a former fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers and was appointed Queen’s Counsel\, now King’s Counsel\, in 2019. \nCandice Alder is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with nearly 20 years of therapeutic experience with families\, children\, and youth. Candice is a former child protection worker in BC\, and has also worked with high-risk children and families in non-profit and public education settings. Candice is a sessional instructor for the School of Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria\, and currently supports children\, youth\, and families through her private practice and work with Child and Youth Mental Health. \nONLINE SESSION INFORMATION: \nDates: Thursday\, May 16\, 2024 \nTime: 12pm to 2pm \nFormat: Online \nCost: \n\n$50 for BCACC Members\n$25 for BCACC student members\n$100 for Non-Members\n\nNOTES:\n\nFor registration support\, please email education@bcacc.ca \nFor student registration\, please email studentmembers@bcacc.ca\nA separate email will be sent the day prior to the event containing the information for joining the webinar. \nThe workshop will be recorded and made available to registrants\, without additional cost\, as part of the registration.\n\n\nDisclaimer: Except where specifically indicated\, the opinions expressed in this notice are strictly those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors\, its officers\, directors\, or staff. Don’t miss this opportunity to expand your professional skills and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those facing these challenging decisions. \nThis workshop is designed to empower helping professionals to effectively support families navigating the MAiD process. Dr. Green will provide strategies for facilitating conversations\, information about connecting individuals with assessment resources\, and demystifying the preparation phase\, including what crucial assessments are involved. \nWhat we’ll cover: \n\nUnderstand the MAiD process and assessment procedures to support families effectively\nExplore the role of RCCs in pre- and post-MAiD support.\nNavigating your own emotions\, such as grief\nDevelop communication skills for compassionate discussions about these tough decisions.\n\nNOTE: This workshop will be recorded and made available to registrants for only two weeks after the live workshop.  \nRegister Now\n  \nABOUT THE PRESENTER:\nStefanie Green is a physician\, speaker\, and the author of the international bestseller This is Assisted Dying. Dr. Green spent ten years in general practice and another twelve years working exclusively in maternity and newborn care before changing her focus in 2016 to medical assistance in dying (MAiD). In her landmark transformative and compassionate memoir\, Dr. Green reveals the reasons a patient might seek an assisted death\, how the process works\, what the event can look like\, and what it feels like to oversee matters and administer medications that hasten another person’s death. \nDeeply authentic and powerfully emotional\, This Is Assisted Dying contextualizes the myriad of personal\, professional\, and practical issues surrounding assisted dying by bringing readers into the room. Dr. Green shares the voices of her patients\, her colleagues\, and her own narrative as she describes the extraordinary people she meets and the unusual circumstances she encounters while navigating the intricacy\, intensity\, and utter humanity of these powerful interactions. As our population confronts issues of wellness\, integrity\, agency and community\, and how to live a connected\, meaningful life\, this progressive and compassionate book is at the forefront of medically assisted dying\, offering comfort and potential relief. \nDr. Green enjoys speaking about MAiD to the public\, to health care communities\, and to a wide range of audiences locally\, nationally\, and internationally. She is an educational resource in the academic world\, can speak to advocacy groups\, and can discuss policy work surrounding MAiD. \nShe is the Founding President (and immediate past president) of the Canadian Association of MAiD Assessors and Providers (CAMAP). She is a medical advisor to the BC Ministry of Health MAiD oversight committee\, a moderator of CAMAP’s national online forum\, has provided expert testimony to the Canadian House of Commons and the Senate\, and has hosted several national conferences on the topic of assisted dying. She is a member of the clinical faculty at both the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. She believes This Is Assisted Dying will change the way people think about their choices at the end of life\, and showcase that assisted dying is less about death than it is about how we wish to live. \n  \nONLINE SESSION INFORMATION: \nDates: Thursday May 30\, 2024 \nTime: 12pm to 2pm \nFormat: Online \nCost: \n\n$100 for BCACC Members\n$50 for BCACC student members\n$200 for Non-Members\n\n  \nNOTES:\n\nFor registration support\, please email education@bcacc.ca \nFor student registration\, please email studentmembers@bcacc.ca\nThe event zoom link will be sent a day before the event.  \nThe workshop will be recorded and made available to registrants for only two weeks after the live stream. Please note\, you must be a registrant to access this session’s recording. \n\n  \nDisclaimer: Except where specifically indicated\, the opinions expressed in this notice are strictly those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors\, its officers\, directors\, or staff.
