About Barbara

I am a client-centred counsellor who uses various counselling methods, believing that being flexible can best accommodate each person’s individual needs. I don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach.

I have worked for many years in the area of short term, strengths-based counselling as an Employee Assistance Program provider. For some people, this approach works well; it is rather like coming in for a tune-up, for example identifying ways to communicate better, reduce anxiety or make an important decision. This form of counselling tends to be about remembering the wisdom and knowledge you already have, and reconnecting with strengths that may have become a bit worn down in the midst of life’s pressures.

Other people’s concerns may be more complex, often trauma-based. With these clients I offer longer-term support to help them develop a deeper understanding of issues that may be affecting their quality of life and relationships, and in the process helping them find ways to move forward in their healing.

An affiliate with the First Nations Health Authority working primarily with the IRSP, my understanding of indigenous culture and the inter-generational effects of colonialism in our country is always growing. I offer a respectful, confidential and comfortable space for indigenous people to process experiences and feelings that may be difficult to share.

My core belief is that the foundation of change is based on self-acceptance and self-compassion. It is hard to move forward until we have accepted who we are in this moment, even if it may not be who we want to be. I offer a judgment-free space to explore thoughts, feelings, beliefs, questions and possible answers in order to create a more peaceful and positive life.
