About Maureen
Website: balancedmindscounselling.ca
A family systems, CBT and ACT trained therapist and clinical supervisor who has worked for 18 years with individuals, couples, and families across the lifespan. I specialized in the following areas:
Relationship troubles – couples in conflict over parenting, retirement decisions, step-family issues, impacts of alcohol and drug use, and family caregiving challenges.
ADHD – I’m a certified ADHD clinical specialist who has worked with adults across the lifespan who are either diagnosed or suspect they have ADHD and want to find strategies for thriving in relationships, career, or school life.
Grief, loss and trauma – I work with families who’ve experienced the loss of a loved one from illness, suicide, and substance abuse. I also work with individuals, couples and families facing the demands of a complex illness, in active (acute), chronic or terminal phases. Women facing complex grief stemming from the loss of an abusive family member or partner is another area of focus in my practice.
Major Life Transitions – I’ve worked with people across many different life changes and transitions. These include: adjusting to life during or after separation or divorce; meeting the demands of new parenting after the birth or adoption of the first child; mid-life parents struggling to help young adult children to launch and achieve greater autonomy; Adapting to single parenting; Women struggling with personal and professional impacts of peri-menopause; Identity changes associated with loss of a relationship, gender identity and transition, and adjustment to retirement life with unexpected illness, or other new life demands (caregiving a spouse, adult child or grandchildren, late life separation or divorce)
Anger and fear management – for men and women who want help with frustration, anger, and addressing fears that often fuel out-of-control emotional responses that come with personal, social, or career costs. Anger can be a useful, positive resource and therapy can help with this transformation.
Some questions to consider as you decide to start therapy:
How will your life be different if this therapy experience is helpful to you?
What will you notice first that’s different?
How will you feel about yourself (or your child, your spouse/partner) once this change is made?
I trained in both the US and Canada in evidence-based and relational/experiential models of therapy including CBT, ACT, Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy and Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT). I’m a certified ADHD coach and an approved service provider for families with autistic children. I consider myself an LGBTQIA2S+ ally, as I work with and receive clinical trainings specific to supporting these members of my community.
