About Nina
I am a client-centred counsellor who seeks to create a brave space for mental wellness. We all hold the capacity to make sense of our lives. I see my role as assisting clients with this by walking beside them and using my skills to help them reach peace and understanding of their own journey and current challenges. We all experience physical and mental injury and I deeply believe that we can work toward health and strength in both areas. I educate my clients about how our brains can be injured by many factors such as childhood attachment, trauma (emotional, physical, sexual, spiritual) and many others.
The good news is current brain science teaches us that we can heal from mental injury that can cause depression, anxiety, anger, relationship challenges and so on. We now know that the brain has a capacity to heal and relearn the stress response using various methods.
My first step in therapy is for you to feel comfortable and cared for. I am an EMDR trained therapist and have done a significant amount of training on how trauma physically and mentally affects the brain. EMDR is offered if the client seeks it and is comfortable with it. I have also done extensive training in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). I seek to help clients understand the roles feelings, emotions and behaviours have and how they affect our daily lives. We learn how altering these can bring positive changes and ease to them and the relationships they share with others.
I’ve been married for 30 years and have 3 children. I have faced my own traumas and continue doing my own healing work, because I have had to. As my own therapist has said “you can only go as deep with your clients as you have gone yourself”.
I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia. I’ve been in private practice for over 7 years, and have also worked as a public high school counsellor for 15 years. Altogether, I bring over 30 years of experience working with children, youth, and families in the public school system and private practice.
If you’re ready to take the next step, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you.
