About Kate
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor through the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. I have a Bachelor of Education and a Masters of Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia. I have worked with children, teachers, parents, and adolescents in the public school system for 16 years- first as a teacher and now as a school counsellor. My experience during this time includes extensive work with neurodivergent and international youth with a focus on advocacy in the school system. I also have a great deal of experience with individual education plans. I am a person-centered counsellor with an emphasis on emotions to regulate the nervous system and create safety.
I am a Certified Therapist in the Foundations of Neuroscience and Satir in the Sand Tray. People get to experience in non-verbal ways what it might feel like when different things happen as they move their figurines within the sand tray during their processing. This is a great tool for working with individuals as the sand can be a great self-regulation tool. This technique helps clients access implicit memories and experiences that are stored in the body and cannot be accessed through talk therapy alone. I also have extensive training in Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT).
I have watched individuals strive to feel good inside, to understand themselves, and learn new ways of being as their brain develops, which is why I work from a neurobiological and child development view. I believe people need support, care, and understanding, and I know the importance of creating safe and encouraging bonds with others. Having a reassuring witness through life is essential and promotes healing. It has helped me tremendously in my own life. We are connected beings who are not meant to be alone with our suffering. When we surround ourselves with people who believe in us, it is incredible what we can accomplish.
Internalizing meaningful and helpful voices can allow individuals to build capacity for change and growth. It is an honour to witness an individuals journey of self- improvement and internal understanding. We can change our environments or change within in order to gain healthy perspectives.
Having young children myself, I support parents, and I understand the demands placed on people to manage all of life’s responsibilities. I have personally found the work of Dan Siegel, Gabor Mate, and Gary Landreth to be highly beneficial in my own parenting in addition to staying current on child and neuroscientific developmental research. I love to stand alongside other parents through this journey.
Finally, I have experience in supporting individuals with autoimmune conditions and skin conditions. I understand the challenges that come with managing life’s health challenges.
