About Derian
Derian approaches therapy from a holistic perspective, drawing on the best of evidence-based counselling techniques and theories such as: Neuroscience, Attachment Theory, Intersectionality, Anti-Oppressive Practice, Internal Family Systems, Observe & Experiential Integration, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Compassion Focus Therapy, and Mindfulness. Derian is passionate about working together with his clients to co-create a plan based on their specific needs, goals, and strengths. The therapies he uses are designed to empower and focuses on overcoming the stigma and blame that can be placed on us when we suffer and struggle with our mental health.
?
Derian believes that people are innately resilient and have access to everything they need to move towards healing and that it is the therapists role to help clients access and leverage this innate wisdom and ability located within. When it comes to trauma Derian believes the symptoms people bring to therapy are the result of having to adapt to the dangers in their world. This means that the things in your life that are sabotaging you, first developed to keep you safe and sane, even if now they have lost their usefulness.
?
Derian believes healing trauma involves three components: 1) Helping our nervous system to find it’s calm grounded state. 2) Helping our brain integrate disturbing memories. 3) Finding compassion for the self-sabotaging ways we adopted survive.
