Heike provides individual as well as caregiver counselling. She assists people who experience challenges in the following areas, with the goal to help people regain their footing in life:
Stress Management
Depression
Anxiety
Concussion
Brain Injury
Aging issues
Caregiver support
Heike’s professional experience includes working in the fields of cognitive aging as well as brain injury. Within the cognitive aging arena, she has spent years researching lifespan development including aging issues such as healthy and pathological aging (i.e., dementia, mild cognitive decline). She has published in this field and is currently writing blogs on associated topics such as aging issues, concussion, and caregiver issues, which you can read at her website (see link below).
As a cognitive aging and a brain injury counsellor, specialized in Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy, Heike helps people in their exploration of and with untangling the challenges they experience. She does so by listening to you, providing insights and education surrounding your personal challenges and assisting with information on how to address them. For example, Heike might provide education surrounding the myths of cognition (e.g., memory functioning) in addition to practical strategies while supporting you emotionally.
Heike’s efforts are geared towards helping you regain hope, be it after an acquired brain injury (i.e. concussion/ traumatic brain injury, anoxia, meningitis, encephalitis, brain tumor, stroke, chemobrain), due to worries about aging issues, or other mental health challenges arising from stress, depression, or anxiety. Importantly, all of these challenges can impact thinking functions negatively, and thereby increase emotional suffering.
Things Heike might do with you to assist you in achieving your goals can include exercises to strengthen your cognitive abilities (e.g. concentration, remember information, learning new info) or emotional insights, guiding you through the feelings of depression, anxiety, grief/ loss, and/ or loneliness/ social isolation, and provide you with tools (functional and cognitive strategies plus education within an empathetic setting).
Heike’s overall goal always is your successful functioning in everyday life and improving your quality of life.
