About Jim
Warm greetings and thank you for your interest. My name is Jim, and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor, with a master’s degree in counselling through University of Calgary. I am currently setting up a private practice in Grand Forks BC.
Mine is a person-centered approach that incorporates aspects of narrative, emotion focused, and solution focused brief therapies. Although I am recent to clinical practice, I have a diversity of experience in the helping professions.
I have been employed as an instructor in the Academic Upgrading and Development department at Selkirk College in Southern Interior BC for over 20 years. It is in this capacity that I developed skills necessary to help people of all ages overcome personal and academic barriers, formulate plans, and gain the confidence and motivation to make their dreams come true. Before this I was a childcare support person in the K to 12 system working with children and adolescents and their families toward academic success and emotional well-being during these crucial early years. And before all that, I was a welder with CP Rail. So I have a good understanding of workplace concerns – particularly in industrial settings.
I have also gained quite a bit of expertise in community mental health working for a non-profit organization as a psycho-social rehabilitation coordinator. I was able to further this experience during my main counselling practicum with Trail Mental Health and Addictions where I provided one-on-one support in a clinical setting and group counselling in the relapse prevention program.
My therapeutic philosophy is that, with help, people are fully capable of affecting meaningful, positive change in their lives. I feel that I bring to the therapeutic relationship an inviting, warm, and authentic presence. My goal is to provide effective, individualized, evidence-based treatment guided by the highest of ethical standards.
My intention is to offer general counselling services specific to the needs of small rural communities. I am comfortable providing counselling for a wide array of psychological, emotional, and existential considerations. And I am equally confident working with individuals and groups of all ages, cultures, and gender identities. While in-person counselling is my preference, I am open to alternative forms of therapeutic support including via Zoom, over the phone, or any other modalities that might become available.
