About Tara
Thank you for visiting my profile and taking the time to figure out which counsellor might be a good fit for you. I wish you the very best on your search.
I finished grad school to become a professional counsellor in 2013 but have been studying healing and therapy methods for over 30 years. I often tell my clients that I walk the talk, having vetted so many different techniques over the years and done my own deep healing work. Born in 1968, I have considerable lived experience as well as professional. I have been a competitive athlete, a teacher, a school counsellor, a professional artist and entrepreneur, an EFAP not-for-profit counsellor, and an eating disorder counsellor. Today, my practice is open to a wide range of issues though I note specializations in ADHD, ADHD parents parenting ADHD kids, Addiction (mild to moderate), Emotions (exploration and acceptance of and regulation as needed), Life Transitions, and Eating Issues.
I am an inclusive, neuroaffirmative practitioner – culturally, spiritually, gender identity, sexuality, age and stage of life. I have much lived experience with ADHD in particular, as a mom, grandma, school counsellor, and woman diagnosed late-in-life.
I often use cognitive behavioural techniques in counselling because how we think, how we talk to ourselves, and what we believe affects everything (our feelings, our behaviour, our self-esteem, our confidence in ourselves and the world around us). I offer a mix of “thought therapy” and any number of other therapies though the most extensive post-graduate training I have is in Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT – sometimes referred to as “tapping”). Like most counsellors, I use a combination of tools and techniques to creatively adapt sessions to meet the needs of individual clients – there is no one size that fits all.
I believe each of us has the capacity to heal and that my job is primarily to act as a trusted confidante and guide. I create space for you to process your thoughts and feelings and help you to find your clarity and meet your own goals. It is work that I am deeply honoured to do.
I am accepting new clients – online, phone, or in-person in the Comox Valley.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Warmly,
Tara
